Question - Pulse - Checkup

Anesthesia is like taking a little nap; when you wake up, surgery will be done :)

FUN FACTS:

  • In one day, your body can produce between 750-1000 ml of urine (if you are a five year old child). That equals to 4-5 cups of water!
  • Did you know your heart beats between 60-100 times per minute? Feel your pulse and count how many times your heart is beating in one minute?
  • You can listen to music while you go to sleep in the OR!!
  • Nitrous gas or laughing gas - did you know this is used to help calm anxiety and allows you to relax?
  • Handwashing can prevent many infections.
  • Do you know what your heartbeat sounds like? Where can you listen to it?
  • What is a stethoscope? Can you listen to your stomach growl with it?

Authors note

I was inspired to write this book and share my experiences after taking care of a little girl who came in with a broken arm for surgery. The little girl was scared and anxious, however, explaining the routine of surgery helped calm her down. She enjoyed being able to choose her own favorite bubblegum mask!

My daughter also had surgery when she was very young; I remember how scared she was. This book is a general outline of what to expect when you go for surgery. It will help you and your child be more prepared and understand what happens once they are in the hospital.

Book Reviews

White coats, new faces, big machines, cold rooms, and the fear of the unknown; being in the hospital can be a very overwhelming experience for a child. ABCs of my first surgery is a beautifully illustrated book for children that introduces the common things encountered during a surgery visit in a very simple way. It creatively depicts the details of the ‘big day’ in a fun manner with easy-to-understand language. Created by an experienced anesthesiologist, this book is a great way to ease your child’s mind and prepare them for their upcoming adventure!

ABCs Of My First Surgery by FA Khan is a colorful story that guides kids through surgery. The illustrations by Bazma Ahmad are amazing and help kids understand what they are reading with some fun visuals. This is a wonderfully written book that explains everything in plain language and also offers facts and useful tidbits of information to help kids enjoy their learning journey. This book is not just for reading, though. Kids can “play” alongside it by learning how to listen to their heartbeat, take their own pulse, listen to their own breathing, and much more besides. This is a good book for all kids facing their first surgery and for their caregivers, too. It is accurate, beautifully written, and a cool, interactive journey for kids to go on. Highly recommended reading for kids of all ages, even if they don’t have to have surgery – it’s a great way to learn about what goes on in a hospital and allay their fears.
